What Is the Cape May Boardwalk?
The Cape May Promenade, sometimes called a “boardwalk,” is a paved walkway that runs parallel to Beach Avenue and stretches nearly two miles. It starts near Mahalo Cape May and runs to Cove Beach.
It is next to the beach and home to a few select vendors.
Why Is the Cape May Boardwalk a Promenade?
A typical boardwalk is made of wood, while Cape May’s promenade is paved.
Previously, Cape May had a wooden boardwalk that was destroyed in a nor’easter in 1962.
The nor’easter, commonly called the “storm of the century” in Cape May, damaged or ruined many dwellings and nearly all Cape May hotels on the beach at that time.
What Does the Cape May Promenade Offer?
On the Cape May promenade, visitors enjoy convenient access to Cape May’s beaches and amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Additionally, the promenade has a few shops, including arcades, candy stores, ice cream shops, and many other vendors.
For those looking for a more dense collection of shops and restaurants, Cape May features the Washington Street Mall, which offers more than 75 establishments a short walk away from the promenade.
Why Should I Visit the Cape May Promenade?
There’s a lot to like about Cape May’s promenade, including:
- It’s free. You don’t have to pay anything or bring a beach tag to access the promenade.
- It’s open during the day and at night. You can safely walk along the promenade in the morning, afternoon, or evening, and it’s well-lit when the sun goes down.
- It offers spectacular views. The promenade’s covered Sunset Pavilion overlooks Cove Beach, a can’t-miss destination for those who want to enjoy some of the Jersey Shore’s most beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape May Lighthouse.
Is There Anything Else I Need to Know About Cape May’s Promenade?
The promenade is open to the public, offers access ramps, and has public restrooms approximately every half mile.
Between May 1 and October 31, you can ride a bicycle or use roller or in-line skates on the promenade between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m.
The town permits dogs on the promenade from November to March.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the promenade.
